Lucie's Place existed as an idea many years before any work began. In the spring of 2011, individuals in the area started seriously discussing what a shelter, such as Lucie's Place, would look like. It was at this time that Lucie's Place began as a project of The Living & Affected Corporation, a local HIV/AIDS organization doing work with people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in marginalized communities. As time went on, the board of Lucie's Place decided to become our own non-profit organization. During this time, we were also hosting community meetings once a week to help get an understanding of what the interest of this project was. As it turns out, our various communities of Central Arkansas were very interested in Lucie's Place.
As the word spreads of Lucie's Place and our goals, we have been getting more conversations from service providers and individuals, looking for assistance.
November 2nd, 2011 Lucie's Place filed their Articles of Incorporation and then began working on the non-profit application. In early July of 2012 we received the news that the IRS granted us non-profit status.
As Lucie's Place works to raise money to open our Transitional Living Program (TLP), we continue to operate a 1-800 number that young adults can call for assistance. In 2013, we assisted 25 LGBT young adults with referrals to programs, bus passes, cell phones & minutes, toiletries, etc. In addition to needing these physical things, often our clients simply need someone to talk to, who won't judge them for their gender identity or sexual orientation.
In 2014, we opened our Free Counseling Program, available to any LGBT young adult who is homelessness, or is at risk of becoming homeless. Our licensed, independent counselors will see each client and work with them on issues surrounding housing, friends, family, etc.
