End of Year 2012
Dear Lucie's Place supporters,
Another year has gone by and it’s time to reflect on the past year of Lucie’s Place, where we have been and where we are going.
We have spent this past year developing the programming we hope to begin in 2013, as well as heavily fundraising and grant writing throughout the year to make these programs possible. We began this year with just over $7,000 in the bank and had just begun the process of applying for our non-profit status. We received our nonprofit status on the 27th of June and were able to send off the 3 grants we had been working on. Financially, we are doing well; please see below for a treasurer’s report, which includes our budget for the 2013 year along with our 2012 yearly statement.
In the first quarter of 2013, we hope to begin 2 programs of Lucie’s Place: emergency short-term housing and free counseling programs, both available to any LGBT young adults who are currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
Our emergency short-term housing program will be for those young adults who suddenly find themselves without a place to stay. Some will have been kicked out of their homes by parents/family; some will have been staying with a boyfriend/girlfriend in a relationship that came to a quick end. Whatever the reason, we have heard from several individuals who needed a place to stay for just a few nights to get back on their feet, and this program will help address those needs.
Our free counseling program will be a place where LGBT homeless young adults can talk with a licensed counselor about issues relating to housing, family, friends, etc., free of charge. These conversations will be important for the personal growth of these young adults, providing the help they need to move on from the past traumas/abuse in their life.
In the past, we estimated that we would be able to open our long-term Transitional Living Program (TLP) towards the end of 2013. However, we now feel the need to push that date back to 2014 for several reasons. Individual funding has well exceeded our expectations for the year; however, funding from foundations has been lacking, partly due to Lucie’s Place lack of a nonprofit status until the middle of the year. We want to ensure the sustainability of our funding before opening this program so as to avoid problems in future years. Long-term TLP is still extremely vital in our area and still very much a goal of Lucie’s Place.
In October, we announced that we were beginning a donation drive to raise $5,000 before the end of the year. Our supporters (that is to say, you) responded very well and we raised $3,790! We have one more week to reach $5,000 and are well on our way! In addition, we received word that we have been awarded two grants for $16,000 in total for our Transitional Living Program. We will also be one of the organizations supported by Hendrix’s Campus Kitty program. The amount is not yet known, but will be between $1,000 and $7,750. December has been a very busy fundraising month for us, so please be sure to visit our Facebook for current funding updates.
Thank you for your support in 2012 and we hope that we will continue to have your support in 2013 and beyond. If you would like to make an end-of-the-year donation, please visit this link or give us a call.
Sincerely,
Penelope Poppers
